Creating a list of SEO resources

Today, for my employer, I am creating a list of top SEO resources for him top refer to after I leave here permanently tomorrow. Here is what I have so far, if anyone has any recommendations or comments on the list, I would really appreciate them! I want to keep the list somewhat compact though - If I hand him a list of 20,000 different links, I can guarantee none would be read…

SEO / Keyword Analysis Links

Overture Tools -Overture is a search engine which used to power yahoo for a while. Generally gets 20% or less of the traffic that Google would get, so vary your stats accordingly.

  1. http://inventory.overture.com/ - The Overture Inventory gives the search volume in the last month for the keywords you specified, along with the search volume of related keywords.

  2. http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/search/tools/bidtool/ - The Overture Bidtool shows the highest bids currently placed upon a certain term within the Overture Search Marketing system, which is very similar in style to Google Adwords. Generally the prices reflected here are 60%-70% of what equivelent keywords would be bid on through the Google Adwords system.

WordTracker – Wordtracker is a paid service to analyze keywords, and links, to find the keywords and phrases that would be the most efficient to target through the use of their ‘Keyword Efficiency Index’.

Other Tools

  2. – The Yahoo SiteExplorer shows the indexed pages and backlinks in the Yahoo Engine. Yahoo shows *all* their backlink data, sorted by link weight. IE, your best backlinks are at the top.

FOR THOSE COMING FROM REDDIT, READ THE EXPLANATION BELOW BEFORE YOU VISIT THE VIDEO:
If you look at the tags associated with Matt’s video here, you will see that someone has managed to get it associated with the Gay Porn tag. Is this a joke by an SEO or fellow Google Employee? Other attached tags include ‘Shoemoney was here’, ‘umpa umpa love’, ‘gilligan’ and more.

I think this is bloody hilarious. Obviously, someone has a great sense of humour, and couldn’t resist the opportunity to poke one at Matt. To whoever did this, great job!

SEO Black Hats Find Major Exploit in Moveable Type

From a Digg post:

“SEO Black Hats have found a major loophole in the comment preview of the Moveable Type blogging platform. This exploit let’s them insert active links into any post, avoiding the “nofollow” penalty usually associated. This allows them to artificially inflate the importance of spam websites, leading to less accurate search engine results!”

This is really too bad, seeing as their are hundreds, if not thousands, of high-ranking blogs out there based on the Moveable Type platform…

The Motivation for Internet Marketing/Moneymaking

I was in the #webmasterradio channel on irc.webmasterradio.fm today, when I read something that both made me laugh, and got me thinking a bit. TheChad, a fellow webmaster, and owner ot The Free Vault Directory said,

WoW is why I after the passive income online. :) I don’t have time to work hard like the shoes and marcuses out there, I have an addiction to cater to

with shoes and marcuses referring obviously to Shoemoney and Marcus Frind, two extremely successful webmasters/moneymakers.

Really, the motivation for many webmasters out their is that we are somewhat lazy. Maybe not lazy in terms of the fact that we don’t do anything, but in the fact that we want to have a stress-free, laid-back life, where we cand do what we want, when we want, and if it takes busting our asses to create websites which can provide the residual income we need to sustain that, well, that’s a worthy goal.

It’s an interesting concept, and one I know I fall into. Hence why I put all that effort into my own sites.

The Bum Marketing Method

Someone I met on the forum at eWealth got me somewhat interested in his ‘Bum Marketing Method”. Travis, the creator, noticed that most of the best conversions come from extremely specialized phrases and searches which have relatively low competition. Anyways, he came up with the idea that if you could place an article related to the phrase you were targeting, it would typically end up near the top of the search results, due to the low competition. This article would get roughly the same CTR as an adwords ad on the same page, but it would be free.

Well, I tried it, and we will see how well this method works. I created an article, and uploaded it to goarticles.com. Within the next few days, it should hopefully become visible within Google’s index by Monday. Then I will be curious to see how much traffic/sales etc. I get through it. The phrase I targetted had 31 results. This is great, because on Wordtracker it shows that the phrase gets 100-200 searched per day. Yee-haw! If I can get 50-60 of those? I’m laughing… even if I get only 10 clicks per day, that is 1 sale per month. If I can make about 30 other articles this way, well, that seems like a health y affiliate income. Plus, the articles don’t expire, so the profits only increase!

Wow - I like that… I hope my optimism is justified. Travis has released his method as a free e-course which you can take. I would definately recommend going through it - it’s alot more detailed and in-depth than the little that I have written here. Without any more ado, here is a like to the Bum Marketing Method!
